Members of the Chelonii order consist of tortoises. Environmentalists and researchers alike refer to them as chelonians. Chelons acquire a distinctive carapace, which is a bony covering originating from their ribcage and serving as a protective shell. During the Triassic Period, over 220 million years ago, turtles first appeared, making them an extremely ancient group of animals. Three reptile species comprise the order Chelonii, which is also referred to as the Testudines: terrapins, tortoises, and turtles.
