15 Places to Visit in Sri Lanka: 2 Week Itinerary

Sri Lanka packs beaches, ancient cities, misty tea country, and world-class wildlife into an island you can circle in a fortnight. Day 1 — Airport to Negombo (1 night)

Almost every international flight lands at Bandaranaike International Airport in Katunayake. Negombo, a fishing town and beach resort just 30 minutes from the terminal, is the ideal soft landing. Palm-lined sand, hundreds of hotels, restaurants and spas — perfect for shaking off the jet lag.

Where to stay

Aria Lagoon — a 4-star beachfront hotel with direct beach access, spacious rooms, king/queen beds and free Wi-Fi.

Day 2 — Colombo city tour (1 night)

Sri Lanka''s commercial capital is a cultural melting pot of colonial mansions, colourful temples and 21st-century skyscrapers. Spend around 6 hours exploring:

  • Pettah bazaar — a chaotic walking tour with your guide
  • Gangaramaya Temple and Beira Lake
  • Independence Square, Viharamahadevi Park and Galle Face Green
  • Sunset over the Indian Ocean from a rooftop pool

Where to stay

Mirage Hotel Colombo — a modern mid-range sea-view hotel in Colombo 3.

Day 3 — Colombo to Galle and Mirissa (1 night)

The 150 km drive south is packed with stops:

  • Madu River boat safari — mangrove forest and cinnamon island
  • Sea turtle conservation project
  • Hikkaduwa Marine Sanctuary and Unawatuna
  • Galle Fort — UNESCO World Heritage Site, the best-preserved Dutch fort in Asia

Where to stay in Mirissa

Garton''s Cape — beachfront boutique hotel, 10 minutes from the whale-watching harbour.

Day 4 — Mirissa & whale watching (1 night)

Leave the hotel by 6:00 am to catch the boat from Mirissa Harbour. This is one of the best places on earth to see blue whales, sperm whales and dolphins. The trip lasts 2–4 hours depending on the season.

Back on land, the rest of the day is for beach bliss, snorkelling, kayaking or Sri Lankan seafood — Mirissa is famous for both.

Day 5–6 — Yala National Park (2 nights)

Yala is the top wildlife stop on the island and home to the world''s highest density of leopards. A full-day jeep safari with picnic lunch on the beach is included.

SpeciesCount
Mammal species44
Bird species215
Wild elephants300–350
LeopardsHighest density worldwide

Pack: light cotton clothes, sunglasses, sunscreen, mosquito repellent, hat.

Day 7 — Ella (1 night)

Ella is a laid-back eco-village 1,000 m above sea level, wrapped in tea gardens and cloud forest. Afternoon hikes to Mini Adam''s Peak and the iconic Nine Arch Bridge.

Where to stay

Ella Flower Garden Resort — modern rooms overlooking the Ella Gap.

Day 8 — Scenic train, Horton Plains & Nuwara Eliya (1 night)

The Ella to Nuwara Eliya train is widely considered one of the most scenic rail journeys in the world. Two express services depart Ella at 06:40 and 09:24; pre-book seats. Your driver meets you at the station and drives you to Horton Plains National Park for a half-day trek to World''s End and Baker''s Falls.

Day 9–10 — Kandy (2 nights)

Sri Lanka''s cultural heart, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the last capital of pre-colonial Sri Lanka.

  • Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic during the evening puja
  • Kandyan cultural dance performance
  • Royal Botanical Garden, Peradeniya — 8,000+ plants
  • Tea plantation and factory tour
  • Kandy Lake, handicraft & gem workshops

Where to stay

Oak Ray Regency — modern rooms just outside the city centre.

Day 11 — Kandy to Dambulla & Sigiriya (1 night)

Dambulla Golden Cave Temple (1st century BC) — hundreds of Buddha statues and thousands of square metres of wall paintings. Then climb Sigiriya Rock Fortress, King Kashyapa''s 5th-century palace with its world-famous frescoes and one of the oldest landscaped gardens on earth.

Day 12 — Polonnaruwa (1 night)

Sri Lanka''s medieval capital and another UNESCO site. Explore the palaces, stupas and the famous Gal Vihara rock-cut Buddhas by bicycle — the best way to cover the archaeological park. Add an hour for the excellent archaeological museum.

Where to stay

Oak Ray Fresco Villa — 4-star hotel near Sigiriya with a landscaped garden.

Day 13–14 — Negombo & departure

Drive back to Negombo (about 3.5 hours). Staying near the airport saves time and money on your final day; many hotels offer half-rate "night use" rooms if you have an early flight.

How to get around Sri Lanka
