In this blog post, we discuss mainly three Sri Lanka 5-day trip packages. These three trips are very popular among Sri Lankan travelers, particularly foreigners. The tour itineraries are carefully crafted to cover three major areas and serve as a leisure tour package, a nature tour package, or an adventure trip.

According to my experience, five days is not enough to explore the island; even with a two-week tour, you can only scratch a part of it (either south or north). I have worked as an interpreter for many of the world’s leading tour operators, such as TUI, Neckerman, Firs Choice, ITS, and Thomson, and most of them offer 5-day tours in various forms.s.

Transport

Choosing the best transport mode for Sri Lanka is very important. Over the course of five days, you need to visit numerous locations while ensuring safe travel across numerous cities. When it comes to transportation, there are many options to consider, but we will highlight three main ones below.

Travel by Taxi

If you are wondering, what is the best mode of travel during your Sri Lanka 5-day trip? A private taxi with a local driver is the best bet for you. Both local and foreign travelers can apply this principle. Traveling by taxi is safe, and most importantly, it saves you valuable time. Hiring a private vehicle allows you to explore the island at your own pace and gives you maximum privacy. A taxi is a bit expensive compared to public transport, but it is cheaper than air transport. Traveling by taxi is the most sought-after option among travelers in Sri Lanka.

On the Sri Lanka 5 days itinerary mentioned in this blog post, we expect that you stick to a private taxi and thereby move swiftly between cities. Saving time on this Sri Lanka 5 days itinerary is extremely important for the tour’s success. During the trip, you have to travel over 1000 km while visiting many dozens of important tourist attractions. Another benefit of using a private vehicle is the ability to reach tourist attractions in every nook and cranny.

Using public transport on your Sri Lanka 5-day tour package

If you use public transport, you are required to use shuttle buses or any other transport mode to reach most tourist places, as public buses ply the main roads. You have to face the same scenario if you plan to use domestic air transport, as the airports are located only in major cities.

Every Sri Lanka trip package that we discuss in this article includes many hours of travel, and you will travel at least 1000 km in every trip package. Traveling in Sri Lanka can be a daunting task and it could be uncomfortable and drain your valuable time if you do not stick to the best transport mode.

Sri Lanka itinerary 5 days with TUK TUK, is it a viable option?

Certain travel options, such as TUK TUK, can pose a significant risk. Traveling by TUK TUK on long-distance trips can be uncomfortable and involve a lack of safety. The TUK TUK is a compact vehicle with three small wheels, and a leather sheet protects the passengers inside. Even though the passenger compartments feature an iron frame, the vehicle’s small iron pipes still pose a significant risk.

How much does it cost for Sri Lanka 5 days trip?

The cost of the trip is determined by a variety of factors, including the hotel category and the number of people in the group. If the number of people in your group increases, the per-person rate can be significantly reduced. For example, the cost of a single-person tour is about 50% higher than the cost per person for two people. The accommodation is also a reason for the high cost of your trip.

The cost of the trip increases dramatically as you go for a higher category of hotels, such as 4-star and 5-star. Big players in the tourism industry, such as ITS, offer the “Beauty of Sri Lanka.” The “Sri Lanka 5-day tour” covers a variety of captivating locations in Sri Lanka. This 5-day tour primarily covers historical and cultural sites such as Sigiriya, Dambulla, Polonnaruwa, and the Tooth Relic Temple. Sri Lanka 5 day tour package: nature cocktail

Some tour operators offer a “Nature Cocktail Tour of Sri Lanka for 5 Days,”  which also includes many places to see in Sri Lanka; however, most of them are natural attractions such as wildlife reserves and rain forests. These 5-day tours take you to unspoiled and little-visited places, as well as tourist attractions that are packed with travelers, such as Yala National Park. The tour covers approximately 900 km of road from beginning to end, so you will be traveling more than 100 km almost every day. The tour revolves mainly around southern Sri Lanka, which is one of the greenest parts of the island.

Sri Lanka 5 days tour: Adventure trip

The 5-day Sri Lanka adventure tour also covers many interesting places to see in Sri Lanka; however, they feature activities such as trekking, hiking, water rafting, etc.

I have only mentioned a few 5-day Sri Lanka tours above, but the island offers a wide variety of other 5-day tour options. I’d like to focus on the three Sri Lanka 5-day tours mentioned above. I feel it is going to serve the masses because it helps you choose the Sri Lanka 5-day tour package that suits you best, broadly under 3 categories. A nature tour, an adventure tour, or a cultural tour make sense, right?

Sri Lanka trips are categorized broadly under Nature, Culture, or Adventure

99 percent of Sri Lanka tour itineraries fall into those three categories, or a combination of them. Below, we present three 5-day Sri Lanka itineraries that you can customize to suit your specific needs. For example, if it is a cultural tour, you can add a little bit of beach stay and adventure; if it is a nature tour, you can add a bit of adventure; and likewise, you can add a little bit of culture to your 5-day Sri Lanka trip that revolves around nature.

Do I have time to relax on the Sri Lanka 5 days tour?

If you are in the mood to have a relaxing, leisurely holiday, then you should be heading to the beach. Very recently, I sent a tour itinerary to a traveler in the UK, which was predominantly a cultural tour; however, I have included a few adventure activities as well as a jeep safari in a national park as optional activities.

It was a 7-day Sri Lanka tour itinerary with one overnight stay on the beach. Because he was interested in culture, I feel it was a well-balanced tour program.  But the customer turned back, asking for changes to his tour itinerary. The client wanted to make further changes to the tour itinerary and added more time for leisure and beach time. After making a few changes, we converted the tour itinerary into a beach holiday package with three one-day tours.

If you are also the kind of traveler who cherishes leisure and needs time to relax on your 5-day trip to Sri Lanka, you better book a 5-day Sri Lanka beach holiday and organize a few day tours to important tourist attractions with your resort guide. If you are in a position to add a few more days to your plan, you can make a 5-day Sri Lanka tour and beach stay separately. Usually, most travelers that come to Sri Lanka spend 10 to 14 days on the island. In the first half of the trip, they take a tour, and towards the end of the trip, they spend time on the beach while relaxing.

Sri Lanka travel itinerary 5 days what do you need to know?

Day 1 of Beauty of Sri Lanka 5-day tour package-Colombo/Sigiriya

Ninety-nine percent of travelers visit the island of Colombo because it is Sri Lanka’s main international airport. Even if you embark on a cruise ship to Sri Lanka, you will arrive in Colombo, as the majority of cruise ships dock in the city’s international harbor.  Given the limited time available on your Sri Lanka 5-day tour package, we recommend opting for a short Colombo sightseeing tour. As a result, you can visit important places in Colombo and save time for other important activities that your operator has planned for your Sri Lanka 5-day tour package.

Is it worth visiting Colombo?

Colombo is not an extravagant tourist attraction. On your Sri Lanka 5 days itinerary, I believe it is a waste of time to have a Colombo city tour. If you need to see the city badly, you can make time for a Colombo city tour on the last day of the tour, and you can have a half-day city tour. A half-day tour of the city is more than enough to explore Colombo. Further reading on Sigiriya.

Assuming you drive directly from your flight to Sigiriya, it will take approximately 4 hours to arrive at the hotel. Naturally, today’s program includes a brief break. The distance to cover is around 175 km; however, it takes around 4 hours on the journey. Perhaps you can drive 200 km in 2 hours in your country, but in Sri Lanka, it takes a bit more time.

The duration of the drive is also highly unpredictable due to the heavy traffic in cities. But according to my experience, you can reach Sigiriya from Colombo in 4 hours’ time (without stops). If you land in Sri Lanka early in the morning (around 4 a.m.), you will be able to reach Sigiriya in 3 hours’ time. However, there will be a processing time for formalities at the arrival lounge, which can range from 30 minutes to more than an hour.

Pinnawala elephant orphanage

Colombo is a coastal city near the beach, and from here, you will drive to the interior of Sri Lanka. The drive on the countryside road is very picturesque, and you will frequently encounter patches of forests, coconut plantations, rubber plantations, and isolated villages. Pinnawala elephant orphanage is the first stop of the day; however, you can make a stop any time before that if you need a small break. Usually, most travelers opt to take a break in Kajugama (before the Pinnawala elephant orphanage) and drink tea or coffee. Read more about the Pinnawala elephant orphanage.

Dambulla cave temple

The next stop on the 5-day Sri Lanka itinerary is the Dambulla Cave Temple, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a main tourist attraction on the island. The distance between the two places is 98 kilometers, and it takes around 2 hours to reach Dambulla from Pinnawala. Further reading on the Dambulla cave temple

After Dambulla golden cave temple it takes around 30 minutes to reach the hotels in Sigiriya and Habarana.

Day 2 of Beauty of Sri Lanka 5 days tour -Sigiriya/Polonnaruwa

On day 2 of the Sri Lanka 5 days itinerary, you will go deeper into Sri Lanka’s cultural triangle and visit the most popular iconic cultural and historical monument in Sri Lanka, the Sigiriya rock fortress. Later in the day, you visit the most ancient capital of Sri Lanka, known as Polonnaruwa. You will not be traveling as much as you did the previous day; however, there will be around a 2-hour drive. Further reading on Polonnaruwa.

On day 2, you will be able to find time for a jeep safari in Minneriya. Usually, the Sigiriya hike takes around 2 hours, and the visit to the Polonnaruwa historical city lasts around 3 hours. You can also book an optional village tour in Sigiriya, which includes cooking and bird watching; however, you must adjust the itinerary’s main ingredients to accommodate the required time for these activities.

Day 3 of Beauty of Sri Lanka 5 days tour –Sigiriya, Kandy

Sinharaja Forest trek on 5 days Sri Lanka trip

According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the Sinharaja rainforest is one of the last remaining primaeval rainforests on the island. This natural jewel harbors a large number of trees, plants, and veins. While more than 60% of the vegetation (trees, plants, veins, and orchids) is endemic to Sri Lanka, many of them are considered rare. Sinharaja boasts a high endemism among its fauna, with an estimated 50% of Sri Lanka’s endemic animal species, including butterflies, amphibians, birds, snakes, and fish species, residing here. Most importantly, the forest is considered to be one of the best places for birds, with 95% of endemic birds.

The virgin forest of Sinharaja has a large tract of hilly areas as well as a lowland rainforest, both of which are considered important ecological areas of the forest. The valuable ecological environment of Sinharaja has largely remained intact over the last thousands of years. In 1978, the World Biosphere Reserve declared Sinharaja rainforest. The World Body declared this virgin rainforest a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988.

Due to the high density of trees and plants in Sinharaja, it may not be the best place to spot animals; however, the Sinharaja rainforest is one of the best places to experience the unique atmosphere of the rainforest while enjoying the sights of many dozens of bird species. According to the naturalists, there are 3 elephants and about 15 leopards living in the forest. The purple-faced langur is the most frequently seen animal in the Sinharaja rainforest, which is also endemic to the island.

Usually, sightings of a flock of birds in the canopy and upper canopy are very common, so you need a binocular to have a clear view of them. The Sri Lanka Crested DroVisitors often spot the Sri Lanka Crested Drongo and the boisterous orange-billed babbler in this area. ecies, 20 species of endemic birds of Sri Lanka occur here, including some of the rare species such as the red-faced malkoha, green-billed coucal, and Sri Lanka blue magpie. The rainforest harbors a large number of amphibian species, including a large number of tree frogs. The endemic green pit vipers and hump-nosed vipers are among the reptiles visible here. Invertebrates include the common birdwing butterfly and leeches, which are endemic.

Udawalawe national park safari on Sri Lanka 5 days tour

Udawalawe National Park is situated in the foothills of Sri Lanka’s central highland, bordering Sabaragamuwa and Uva provinces. The Udawalawe multi-purpose project established the park by clearing a large tract of the jungle for a new settlement. The sanctuary was created to provide a safe home for the displaced animals due to the new settlements and the expansion of the Udawalawe reservoir.

Every year, Udawalawe attracts a large number of tourists, and it is one of the best places to spot wild elephants. This open elephant habitat has many unique features, such as grasslands and the Udawalawe reservoir, which allow the jumbos to thrive. One of the most interesting features of the park is the Udawalawe reservoir, which provides plenty of water to the jumbos even during the drought. An estimated 250 elephants reside in the park.

Rarely, visitors can spot Sri Lankan leopards, rusty-spotted cats, and fishing cats on the safari. Visitors rarely see the endemic Sri Lankan sloth bear, despite its presence. Sri Lankan sambar deer, Indian muntjac, Sri Lankan axis deer, wild boar, Sri Lankan spotted chevrotain and water buffalo are among other mammal species. Golden jackals, toque macaques, Asian palm civets, grey langurs, and Indians are also residing in the park. Researchers have spotted five species of mice in Udawalawe. In 1989, researchers recorded the endemic Ceylon spiny mouse in Udawalawe’s Yala National Park. The national park also records Indian bush rats and three species of mongoose.
