Train Trips in Sri Lanka: The Complete Guide to Scenic Rail Journeys

Train trips in Sri Lanka are among the most memorable experiences on the island — and for good reason. The Kandy-to-Ella hill country line is ranked the 4th most beautiful train journey in the world, and the coastal Colombo-to-Galle route hugs the Indian Ocean the entire way. This guide covers every popular route, class, ticket price and timetable you need to plan the perfect Sri Lanka rail journey.

Sri Lanka's compact rail network delivers some of the world's finest scenery — from the busy urban sprawl of Colombo, through misty hill-country tea gardens capped by green mountains, to the palm-fringed southern coast. Trains are affordable, atmospheric and a wonderful way to meet local commuters, schoolchildren and office workers. Do note: during rush hour the carriages get very crowded, so seat reservations matter on long routes.

  • Hill country line — Colombo / Kandy → Nanu Oya (Nuwara Eliya) → Ella → Badulla
  • Southern coastal line — Colombo → Galle → Matara → Beliatta
  • North-western line — Colombo → Puttalam
  • Eastern line — Colombo → Trincomalee / Batticaloa (via the North Central Province)
  • Northern line — Colombo → Anuradhapura → Jaffna → Kankesanthurai

The train ride from Kandy to Ella: Sri Lanka's most famous rail journey

For most travellers, "train trips in Sri Lanka" means one thing: the Kandy-to-Ella stretch of the hill country line. As the slow blue train climbs the mountains, cool wind rushes through open windows, mist-shrouded tunnels flash past, and endless tea plantations, cascading waterfalls, vegetable plots and lush forest patches roll by. It is regularly cited as one of the most beautiful rail rides on earth.

How to book the Kandy-to-Ella train

You can book through a local tour operator, use the Sri Lanka Railways online reservation system, or buy tickets in person at Kandy, Colombo Fort or Nanu Oya stations. Demand is very high — reserve 1st and 2nd class seats at least 30 days ahead, ideally 90 days. The hill country ride is included in most Seerendipity Tours Sri Lanka packages such as the 5-day and 7-day tours, and dedicated 3-day hill-country tours combine it with the Temple of the Tooth and the Royal Botanical Garden at Peradeniya.

The Ella Odyssey luxury train

Launched in 2022, the Ella Odyssey is a special tourist-focused express running Colombo → Badulla. It stops only at the most scenic hill-country stations and is the most comfortable way to experience the ride.

Can I do the entire Sri Lanka tour by train?

Not really. The rail network only connects major cities, and most tourist attractions are still 30–90 minutes from the nearest railway station. For a multi-stop Sri Lanka itinerary, the smartest approach is to combine a private chauffeur-guided car tour with one or two scenic train segments — typically Kandy → Ella and/or Colombo → Galle. Your driver drops you at the starting station and meets you at the arrival station.

The hill country line: Colombo — Kandy — Nanu Oya — Ella — Badulla

Laid by British engineers in the 19th century to move tea from the mountains to Colombo port, this 294 km line is now Sri Lanka's most scenic rail journey. Highlights along the way:

  • Peradeniya — Royal Botanical Garden
  • Kandy — Temple of the Tooth Relic, gateway to the hills
  • Hatton / Nallathanniya — jumping-off point for Adam's Peak
  • Nanu Oya — the station for Nuwara Eliya
  • Pattipola — the highest station in Sri Lanka (over 1,800 m)
  • Haputale, Bandarawela, Ella — cool-climate hill towns and hiking bases
  • Badulla — the end of the line

The most scenic segment is Kandy → Nuwara Eliya → Ella — about 3 hours and the section every traveller should ride.

Best time of day for the Kandy-to-Ella train

The 08:45 morning departure from Kandy is the traveller favourite. Early mist evaporates as the sun rises over the tea gardens, giving the clearest views. Evening trains can be beautiful too, but low clouds often roll in and obscure the peaks. Total travel time Kandy → Ella is roughly 6–7 hours.

The southern coastal line: Colombo to Galle and Matara

The "Ruhunu Kumari" and other coastal expresses trace the Indian Ocean the entire way between Colombo and Galle — bays, coves, sand dunes and fishing villages sliding past your window. The Colombo–Galle train takes about 2.5–3 hours on the express, compared to 4–5 hours by road on the A2, and saves the price of a private transfer. The line has now been extended past Matara to Beliatta.

The northern line: Colombo to Jaffna and Kankesanthurai

Closed for decades during the civil war, the northern line has been fully rebuilt and is now one of the safest and most rewarding train trips in Sri Lanka. The Yal Devi Express and modern intercity A/C trains cross paddy fields, coconut plantations and the Habarana forest — where wild elephants are often visible from the window.

Booking Sri Lanka trains online

The Sri Lanka Railways e-ticketing system now allows foreign travellers to book reserved 1st and 2nd class seats up to 90 days in advance using a passport and international credit card. You can also reserve in person at major stations (Colombo Fort, Kandy, Galle, Ella, Jaffna). 3rd class tickets are sold on the day at station counters.

Practical tips for train trips in Sri Lanka

  • Book early — hill country 1st and 2nd class seats sell out 1–3 months ahead in peak season.
  • Bring your own toilet paper and hand sanitiser — non-A/C carriage toilets rarely stock them.
  • Sit on the right side travelling Kandy → Ella for the best tea-country views (and the left side going Ella → Kandy).
  • Guard your belongings at doorways and in crowded 3rd class carriages.
  • Pack a light jacket for the hill country — Nuwara Eliya and Pattipola get cold, especially early morning.
  • Buy snacks on the platform — vendors sell samosas, vadai, wade, corn on the cob and sweet tea at almost every stop.

Frequently asked questions

Which is the most scenic train trip in Sri Lanka?

The hill country line between Kandy and Ella — and specifically the Nanu Oya → Ella stretch — is universally considered the most scenic train trip in Sri Lanka and one of the most beautiful in the world.

How long is the Kandy to Ella train ride?

Approximately 6–7 hours by regular express. The Ella Odyssey tourist train is a little faster because it makes fewer stops.

Is 1st class worth it on Sri Lanka trains?

For the hill country line, yes — the Observation Car and A/C carriages give you guaranteed comfortable seats. On short coastal hops (Colombo–Galle) 2nd class reserved is more than enough.

Can I combine a train ride with a private tour?

Yes — this is the setup we recommend most travellers. Your chauffeur-guide drops you at the starting station and meets you at the arrival station with your luggage, so you enjoy the ride without carrying bags.
